Who is Leo Greiml?

Greiml made his professional debut for Rapid Wien in a 2–1 league loss to SK Sturm Graz in May 2019 at the age of 17 — which was the first leg of a Europa League play-off game, showing just how much the youngster was sought after at the club.

Since his debut back in 2019, Greiml has featured 24 times for Rapid Wien, including two games in this season’s UEFA Europa League, one of which came against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium. Despite losing 4–1, an experience like that as a teenager can only benefit him in the long run.

After featuring for one game at the end of the 2018/19 season, the centre-back had to wait until July 2020 to get his first run of starts in the Austrian top flight, starting eight of Rapid Wien’s final nine league games last season — impressing boss Dietmar Kühbauer.

Greiml has continued his season-on-season progression in Austria enjoying his most senior appearances in a single campaign, and has become somewhat of a mainstay in a side which is second place in the Austrian Bundesliga, just the one point off Red Bull Salzburg at the time of writing.

The 19-year-old has also made appearances in the Europa League and Champions League qualifying for the first time, experiencing big game matches, which highlights not only the trust the Wien coaching staff have for Greiml, but the mentality the player has.

Over the next 4-weeks I’ll be watching Leo Greiml and updating this piece weekly to provide a detailed scout report.
