Who is David Schnegg?

David Schnegg returned to former club WGS Tirol in the summer of 2020 in the hunt for regular game time in the Austrian first division, and the loan move has been successful so far for a club who were spared from relegation last season after SV Mattersburg filed for Bankruptcy — WSG now boast a 5th place position.

This season is Schnegg’s first real run of game time in the Austrian Bundesliga who had featured just twice in the top division prior to the 2020/21 campaign which came at LASK during the 2019/20 season. One of those games came against Austrian champions RB Salzburg.

Prior to the two appearances for LASK last season, the 22-year-old had only ever featured in the 2nd division, and actually started off playing for WSG as a Wide-right and Wide-left midfielder before being used as a Left-back for FC Liefering in 2018.

In 2019, LASK recruited the youngster and switched between the first-team and their development team FC Juniors OÖ who play in the second division, where he was deployed as a left wing-back.

Manager Thomas Silberberger after signing Schnegg at the start of the season:

“He was an absolute top player in the second division. Now he has also enjoyed top training. We are happy that he will join us. And I am convinced that he will deliver in the Bundesliga!”

Since joining WSG on-loan in the summer, Schengg has progressed and made the step up from the 2nd division — and has been trusted by Silberberger who has started the Austrian in each of the 15 league games so far in a 4–4–2 system.

Over the next 4-weeks I’ll be watching David Schnegg and updating this piece weekly to provide a detailed scout report.
